The Shenduruny wildlife sanctuary is home to
numerable animals like elephants, wild boar, tigers, leopards, bisons,
langurs, sambar, lion-tailed macaques and deer. West coast tropical
evergreen forests also inhabit the sanctuary. It is interesting to note
that the Shenduruny forest gets its name from a widespread species of
tree called Chenkuruny (Gluta travancoria). In the heart of the forest
is located a 26 sq km artificial lake formed by the Parappar dam built
across the Shenduruny and Kulathupuzha rivers. The lake forms one of the
important attractions of the region.
