Religion is the most important part of the social
life of Indian people and Kerala is no exception to this. Of all the
religious places, temples are more homogenously spread across all parts
of Kerala. These temples are dedicated to various gods and goddesses
from the Hindu mythology. Many of these temples are known for their
architectural style and magnificent sculpture. Most of these temples are
carved in the traditional style. Some of the significant temples in
Kerala include the Padmanabhaswamy temple, Vadukkumnathan Temple, Vaikom
Temple, Chottanikkara Temple, Mannarshala Temple, Ananthapura Lake
Temple and the Ambalapuzha Temple.
Sabarimala Temple
Sabarimala is one of the most famous pilgrim centers of Kerala. The
temple is located atop a hill in the Western Ghats. This holy shrine at
Sabarimala temple is dedicated to Lord Ayyappa. It is interesting to
note that Sabarimala is named after Shabari, who did penance so that she
could meet Lord Rama. Two main events take place at the Sabarimala
temple every year. These are the Mandal Puja and the Makara Sankranti
Puja, which are celebrated from November to Middle of January.
Guruvayoor Temple
Guruvayoor is a sacred and important pilgrim center of Kerala. The
famous Sri Krishna Temple is situated at Guruvayoor. The walls of the
sanctum are inlaid with beautiful mural paintings and carvings.
Sri Padmanabh Swamy Temple (Trivandrum)
Sri Padmanabha Swamy Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The temple is
an amazing structure with a 100 feet high 'gopuram', built in Dravidian
style. The temple is also known for the Mural paintings and stone
carvings.
Vadukkumnathan Temple (Trichur)
Vadukkumnathan is a famous Shiva temple, located in Thrissur (Trichur).
Vadukkumnathan temple is one of Kerala's most ancient shrines. The
temple also houses a museum of ancient wall paintings, wood carvings and
artifacts of historical value.
