Parambikkulam wildlife sanctuary is located in a
valley between the Anamalai ranges of Tamil Nadu and the Nelliyampathy
mountain ranges of Kerala. The Parambikkulam Wildlife Sanctuary is
spread over an area of 285 sq km on the Western Ghats. Besides the
sanctuary, there are many other attractions at Parambikulam. These
include boat cruises in the Parambikkulam reservoir and trekking (with
the permission of authorities). Parambikkulam is reachable by road from
Pollachi in Tamilnadu.
In the sanctuary one can get a glimpse of the rare fauna found in these
parts of India. The jungles of Parambikkulam also provide shelter to
many tribes like the Malayars, the Kadas and the Muthuvans. Some of the
important animal life that are seen here are Nilgiri langurs, bonnet
macaques, tigers, lion tailed macaques, spectacled cobras, vipers,
kraits, turtles, darters, black eagles and little cormorants. Besides
fauna, some important flora life at the sanctuary includes neem, teak,
rosewood and sandalwood.
