Kerala, commonly known as God's own country, is
located on the southernmost tip of the Indian mainland. Karnataka
surrounds Kerala from the North while Tamil Nadu lies to the East of
Kerala and the Arabian Sea borders the Kerala coast on the west. The
Western Ghats run north to South and separate Kerala from the rest of
the country. The state lies between 80 18 ' and 120 48 ' north latitude
and 740 52' and 770 22' east longitude. A narrow strip of coastal plain
runs along the Arabian Sea from North to South. The breadth of Kerala
varies from 32 km in the extreme north and south to over 120 km in the
middle. Based on geographical features, Kerala is divided into hills and
valleys, midland plains and coastal plains. Numerous hills and hillocks
of Kerala dot the Western Ghats. Kerala is well connected to rest of
India by rail, road and air.
