The Krishnapuram Palace is located at Kayamkulam, 47
km from Alappuzha. The Palace is a rare example of the Kerala style of
architecture; complete with narrow corridors, gabled roofs and dormer
windows. The palace was once the residence of the rulers of Kayamkulam
kingdom. The Krishnapuram palace is today a protected monument under the
Archaeology department. At present the palace is an archaeological
museum, with the most fascinating exhibit being the 49 sq meters
Gajendra Moksham (the largest single band of mural painting so far
discovered in Kerala).
The mural was placed at the entrance of the Krishnapuram palace from
the pond to help the kings to worship the deity after their bath. Other
attractions at the Krishnapuram palace are the beautifully landscaped
garden in the palace compound with a variety of flora, typical of
Kerala, and a newly constructed Buddha mandapam, where a recently
recovered statue of the Buddha is housed. Other collections at the
Krishnapuram palace museum include rare antique bronze sculptures and
paintings.
