The Kappad beach is one of the most charming of
beaches in Kerala. Kappad has been known in history and geography texts
as the gateway to the Malabar Coast. It was here, 501 years ago, the
Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama (1460-1524) sailed in and stepped
into Kerala to create a new chapter in the maritime history. The spices
and wealth of Malabar first brought the Arabs, the Phoenicians, the
Romans, the Greeks, the Portuguese, the Dutch and the English to Kerala.
Kappad has witnessed many such historical events in the past. Today,
only a little stone monument is left at the Kappad beach to speak of its
historical importance and past. On the rocks nearby is a temple said to
be 800 years old. Besides its historical importance, the Kappad beach is
like haven to the tourists, especially the sea faring tourists. The
ideal route to Kappad is along the backwaters. Unspoilt and quite, the
picturesque and beautiful backwaters of Kappad offer a bewitching
experience to the visitors. A ride down the backwaters through the
Korappuzha River brings one to the Kappad Beach, one of the most
beautiful places in Kerala.
