The Pazhassiraja Museum is located at Kozhikode in
north Kerala. An absolute treasure trove for historians and connoisseurs
of art, the Pazhassiraja Museum is located in the land of spices, which
lured navigators from time immemorial. The Art Gallery adjacent to the
museum displays the paintings of Kerala's esteemed artists, Raja Ravi
Varma, whose works brought international repute to the State.
The Pazhassiraja museum is managed by the State Archaeology Department.
The museum displays mural paintings, ancient coins, antique bronzes,
umbrella stones, models of temples and similar megalithic monuments. The
museum and the art gallery are named after the great Pazhassiraja of the
Padinjare Kovilakom of the Kottayam royal family. The well known,
'Pazhassi Revolt' (against the British East India Company) was led by
Pazhassiraja. Also called the Lion of Kerala, Pazhassiraja is credited
with introducing guerilla warfare in the hills of Wayanad to resist the
British colonialism.
