The Indo-Portuguese Museum is located in Fort Kochi
and showcases the Portuguese influence in both the art and the
architecture of this region in general and Kerala in Particular. The
museum is an important center to learn about the Indo-Portuguese Art
heritage, which survives to even this day. The Indo-Portuguese museum is
the outcome of the tireless efforts of the late Dr. Joseph Kureethra,
the former Bishop of Kochi. The Bishop established the Indo-Portuguese
Museum to preserve some of the most important and invaluable collections
for posterity. This museum is divided into five main sections. This
division has been made on the basis of the nature of items displayed.
These divisions are Altar, Treasure, Procession, Civil Life and
Cathedral.
The Indo-Portuguese museum houses some outstanding collections, which
are known for their artistic and architectural wonder, bearing the mark
of strong Portuguese influence. Some of the collections include a
chasuble (19th century) from Bishop's House, a piece of the altar made
in teak wood (16th century) from the Church of Our Lady of Hope,
Processional cross, which is a combination of silver and wood (17th
century), Indo-Portuguese Monstrance (18-19th century), from Church of
Our Lady of Hope, Vypeen from Santa Cruz Cathedral, Fort Kochi.
